Week #15

Learning Log for Week of December 7th - December 11th

My favorite thing this week was science and learning about amphibians.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on Khan Academy and Brain Pop.  I was able to work more on my early elementary math.  I did Brain Pop Junior and learned more math as well as did science.  One of my favorite things was to build dinosaurs, you get to pick the head, body, and tail. If it's not balanced, you have to keep trying.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #22 and Lesson #23.  In Lesson #22 I learned about subtracting and when you need to re-group.  I also learned about the hour and put the hour and minute hand together.

English/Language Arts:

I finished my book Who is Ernest Shackleton. It is a really cool book about an explorer that explored the south pole.  I want to be an explorer when I grow up so it's cool reading about his life.

Science:

This week in science we learned more about amphibians.  I learned that they often times start in the water and then move to land, this is what a frog does.  He has gils when he is born and then his lungs develop as he gets older.  Amphibians are cold blooded animals.

Tech:

I didn't do any specific assignments this week, but I worked on just building and creating my own projects.  I worked with my legos in building different models.  I want to make something that can be used like in a Minecraft came.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our indoor soccer practice. I only have two more weeks of indoor soccer.  I love watching the older kids play when I go!  I am working on all my different skills.

Week #14

Learning Log for Week of November 30th - December 4th

My favorite thing this week was having my friends come over to

see what our homeschool is like and learning about our science lesson.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on Khan Academy.  I earned additional points and was able to unlock a new avatar.  I also showed a friend that came over for a lesson brain pop junior and how it works and what I like about it.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #21 that taught me about minutes.  I also started Lesson #22 where I learned about re-grouping.  I like using my blocks to help me set up a problem that if I need to go next door to borrow a ten.

English/Language Arts:

I finished my book Who is Jackie Robinson! Then on Saturday night we watched the movie "42" with my family. I liked the story in the book where a pitcher from the Pittsburgh Pirates threw a ball and hit Jackie's head on purpose because he was black and he didn't like him because Jackie got up and he kept going. I learned that all people are created equal and should be treated the same.

Science:

This week in science we learned more about mammals.  We talked specially about marsupials and talked about the Tasmanian Devil.  There aren't many left because people are moving into their habitat and because when some animals are killed the Tasmanian Devil they go to eat the meat and they get hit by a car.

Tech:

I took a break from my Tech class this week because I am ahead on my assignments. But my favorite lego assignment so far has been the goal keeper. I liked it because I really love soccer and I like being the goal keeper because you get a lot of exercise running around to make sure the other team doesn't make a goal.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our indoor soccer practice. We learned new tricks called scissors and pull back. My favorite trick I have learned is the pull back because it is fun and it makes you a better soccer player.

Week #12

Learning Log for Week of November 16th - November 20th

My favorite thing this week was going the aquarium field trip.

I liked seeing the different animals, especially in the rain forrest part.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on brain pop junior and khan academy. I watched videos on brain pop junior on science. I worked on khan academy to get my new avatar.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 20 and took my test from Math-U-See.  It was more Multiple-Digit Column Addition and so since I worked on it in Lesson #19, it was a easier this week.  I also worked on Khan academy in math to earn points for a new avatar.

English/Language Arts:

I kept reading my book Who is Jackie Robinson. I have been learning about how white and black people were separated from restaurants and different places in the baseball stands.  It was hard to Jackie to have to be tough when people were mean to him for playing baseball just because he was black.  I wrote in my journal this week too.

Science:

This week our science we worked on shadow and light.  We talked about how shadows happen and we made shadow puppets.  We made a shark, sail boat, snail, and a cloud.  We also went to the Aquarium on a field trip for science this week.  My favorite thing about the field trip was learning about the penguins.

Tech:

I played more with my goal keeper and then I built the soccer fans project.  It was hard to build the soccer fans, but I figured it out. I got to record different voices for the fans that I can code and then play.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our indoor soccer practice. We learned some new moves. I have videos that my coach sent that I am to work on at home.  It is practicing different toe taps.

Week #11

Learning Log for Week of November 9th - November 13th

My favorite thing this week was going on another field trip to

the Children's Curiosity Museum and this time we took our friends with us.

The Rainforest is my favorite part.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked on brain pop junior. I learned about subtraction, addition, and measuring. I took quizzes on the measurements.  I also learned about patterns and took the quizzes.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 19 and took my test from Math-U-See.  It was Multiple-Digit Column Addition. I was sort of upset cause it was hard, but I got through it. I feel like it's good to learn about math so you can know what to do when you are a dad and in college, it was just hard.  I also helped my mom bake ginger molasses cookies and I got to read the recipe and figure out the measurements for the cookies.

English/Language Arts:

I started a new book Who is Jackie Robinson.. Some of my favorite things about Jackie Robinson was that he really liked all sports and he could play all sports. His older brother did track and field and so did Jackie. When Jackie would get passed by other runners, he would kept going because he knew he needed to keep going and that he might still be able to win. He was a good competitor, he was nice, kind, friendly, and sometimes he was funny.  Jackie was also shy. He wanted to compete in the 1942 Summer Olympics, but because of WWII he wasn't able to compete. He ended up signing up to be in the US army.

Science:

This week our science experiment was a homemade volcano. We put baking soda, dish soap, and the water in a cup.  There was no reaction when we added these ingredients together.  But when we added the vinegar it made it erupt.  Then we watched a video about volcanos in Hawaii. We made our lava orange like the volcanos in Hawaii.

Tech:

I was excited to build lots of my projects.  So the first project I did was my flying bird.  Then I built my goal kicker and I tried different things that it could kick.  Then I built my goal keeper, which is my favorite project so far.  He is cool cause he can block stuff and I can stand him up or put him on his side.  At first I made him so he couldn't move a lot and then I added more legos to make him be able to go even further.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our indoor soccer practice.  We learned some new moves.  One of them is when someone is bringing the ball to you, from the opposite team, you stop the ball with your foot, then you put your foot on top of it and kick the ball a little bit behind you and turn the ball and start going the other way to make a goal.

Week #10

Learning Log for Week of November 2nd - November 6th

My favorite thing this week was going to the Museum of Curiosity and

going to the Rainforest exhibit

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I worked in Khan Academy.  I earned more points and helped me with my math.  I got to do some math that I had never done before when I clicked watch video, that was really cool

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 18 from Math-U-See.  It was Multiple-Digit Column Addition. It was hard, but I was able to get it done. I like doing the Math on Brain Pop and Khan Academy.

English/Language Arts:

This week I kept reading my book, Who is Abraham Lincoln and my goal is to finish it next week.  I put a book on hold at the library, it's the called The Magic Tree House. My sister said these were some of her favorite books when she was in 2nd grade, so I am excited to start reading it when it comes in.  My favorite thing I did was go to the scout shop, I am becoming a cub scout next month.  We got my wolf book and I started reading in it with my mom.  I am working on memorizing the scout oath and law.

Science:

This week our science experiment was "Action-Reaction," We took a dollar bill and we tried two experiments. The first was to have someone else drop the dollar bill and count how many seconds it took us to catch the dollar bill, and then the other we dropped the dollar bill and we counted how many seconds till we caught the dollar bill.  Each time we dropped the dollar bill and caught it, we were faster because our mind sent a single to our arm that we needed to catch it.  We also talked about inertia and how an object that stays at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion.  We watched a video of an experiment where they put a glass of water and then a pin tin over the glass and then set an empty toilet paper roll on top of the pie tin and then set the egg on top of the toilet paper roll.  Then the scientist backed away and used his hand to knock the pie tin off the glass. The egg dropped straight down into the water, it was awesome. I started a new program called "Doodle Crate." It comes in the mail once a month and I get to work on different things, this month I get to work on maps.

Tech:

I am a little ahead in my Robotics Class so I did some more practice and coding with my goal keeper. I want it to be able to kick and block with different small toys.  My whole family wants to try different things, I am going to finish it next week.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our first indoor soccer practice.  It is at a place called Soccer City. Playing soccer inside is a little easier because sometimes when you are playing outside you can slip and fall, but inside that doesn't happen.  I play at Soccer City once a week, but I am still working on my soccer skills when I am at home.

Week #9

Learning Log for Week of October 26th - October 30th

My favorite thing this week was starting my Khan Academy Account.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I set up my account with Khan Academy. I did the math section, it is really fun and you can have your own avatar. I like how you can do math, reading, and science.  My goal is to get 10,000 points so I can change my avatar.

Math:
This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 17 from Math-U-See.  It was on rounding the 1,000's place.  It was hard because you have more numbers to look at.

English/Language Arts:

This week I kept reading my book, Who is Abraham Lincoln. I liked learning about the civil war. My mom is also looking into different language curriculum programs to help me with my reading, so I am excited to start a new program.

Science:

This week our science experiment was "The Five Senses." We took three bowls of water: one hot, one room temperature, and one cold.  We put one hand in the hot water bowl and the other in the cold water bowl and we had to keep our hands in the water for 30 seconds.  Then after the 30 seconds, we put our hands in the room temperature water bowl.  The hand that was in the hot bowl felt the room temperature water was cold and the hand that had been in the cold water bowl felt the room temperature water was warm.  I learned that how we perceive things is effected by our environment. And that our different senses are amazing and help us live in our world.

Tech:

This week for my Robotics Class, I started building my goal keeper.  This was the one I wanted to do the most because I like being the soccer goalie position.  For Halloween I dressed up like a Brazilian goal keeper.  I am going to finish next week and see what kinds of things it can kick.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had our last Soccer game of the season.  We had two players that were gone, so we had a smaller team and I had to run around a lot.  We lost our game, but it was really close and we tried really hard.  Our season is over, but I get to start indoor winter practice next week.

Week #8

Learning Log for Week of October 19th - October 23rd

My favorite thing this week was learning our science experiment.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I did BrainPop. I did the section in math on place value to help me learn more since this is what I was doing in Math Lesson this week. I played shark fish which helped me more about geography. You are a shark and you click on a word that is suppose to answer the question like "What is the largest river in China?"

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 16 and took my test.  This section was learning place value with the 1,000;s place.  It was hard a little bit, but once I got use to it it wasn't so hard.

English/Language Arts:

This week I kept reading my book, Who is Abraham Lincoln. I learned more about when Abraham Lincoln became president and that he was our 16th President.  President Lincoln had some hard times, while he was President, his son Willie died when he was 11.  When the Civil War started, President Lincoln's General, George McClellan, he didn't think the army was ready and so he often kept army back so they lost battles that they could have won.  So President Lincoln decided something needed to change and he said, "If McClellan does not want to use the army. I would like to borrow it for a time."

Science:

This week our science experiment was "cleaning pennies." We poured vinegar into a cup and mixed it with some salt until it dissolved and then dropped several dirty pennies into the cup. We watched how the salt was dissolving and how the pennies were getting clean. The dirt or residue that was on the pennies is called copper oxide. We talked about the statue of liberty and how it was a a bronze color originally and how it turned green over time.

Tech:

This week for my Robotics Class, I was able to finish building my Alligator. My favorite thing about the alligator is that it could snap it's mouth. The challenging thing about this project was that the first time I went to build it I didn't have two rubber bands, that make the alligator snap it's mouth, so we had to order another rubber band in. My brother, sister, and I would practice putting different things in it's mouth.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had practice on Monday night. We focused on passing and goal keeping.  On Wednesday my coaches son and fellow soccer teammate, Kaden, had a soccer birthday practice.  We have a game this Saturday that my grandpa is taking me too and I hope we win!

Week #7

Learning Log for Week of October 12th - October 16th

My favorite thing this week was learning about Abraham Lincoln.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I did BrainPop with my sister. We learned about data and probability. I learned about line graphs and how you can show data. I also learned about how probability work and then we solved problems. We also learned about width, length, and other measurements.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #14 and Lesson #15 in my Math-U-See. They teach about measuring with feet, I learned that there are 12" in a foot.  Then I got to learn about perimeter.  I liked using my ruler to solve some of the problems on my worksheets.

English/Language Arts:

This week I got a new book from the Library called, Who is Abraham Lincoln. I learned that Abraham was a funny guy who liked to play jokes. One of his jokes he played was on two men who were getting married on the same day, he arranged for the men to be driven to the other church. Abraham Lincoln did not like slavery.

Science:

This week my family and I got a book called, The Everything Kids Science Experiments Book, and each week we are going to do an experiment from the book.  This week we did the experiment "Animal Camouflage." We got 3 different pieces of colored paper and cut them out in tiny squares and them put them on a piece of paper that was one of the 3 colors we cut out. We then timed how many squares we could pick up in 7 seconds.  My sister got 10 squares and I got 9 squares. We found out that animals that are colored the same as their environment are protected from predators.  My dad showed us his camouflage military uniform he got from my uncle who is in the army. We also looked at pictures and watched a video on animals that camouflage in their environment, my favorite was the scorpion fish.

Tech:

This week I finished my lion. I like it because it is like the lions on Gorongosa Park. It can roar and stand up.

P.E.:

I had just one soccer practice this week because of fall break. But I got some neighbor friends and we went and played soccer a couple of times at the park. I practiced on my dribbling.

Week #6

Learning Log for Week of October 5th - October 9th

My favorite thing this week was learning about a park in

Africa called Gorongosa Park.mI want to visit there someday

and I want to be an explorer when I grow up.

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my sister and I went onto Brain Pop and learned about fractions.  We played a game about fractions called Pearl Driver, it's a game where you have to dive down to find the pearls. You dive down the measurements it tells you to to find a pearl. We both really liked it!

Math:

This week in Math I did my Unit #12 and took my test.  I learned how to do column addition.  I also learned how to add numbers that are money in columns.

English/Language Arts:

I finished my book The Haunted Library, the Ghost in the Attic! Grandma Karen told Claire, her granddaughter, that she could see ghosts when she was 9 like Claire. She meet Kaz and she said she was going to help Kaz find his family.  I hope there is a next book written because I want Kaz to find his family.

Science:

My favorite thing I did this week was to find a program on PBS called, "Gorongosa Park, Rebirth of Paradise." One episode they showed different elephants and how they eat, move around, and keep their territory safe. They also showed a huge group of water birds nesting in trees.  They showed huge lions battling for their territory, the lions were named MO2, Gora, and the Mando Brothers.  They think the Mando brothers are going to win over the territory, but we don't find out till next episode.  I want to be an explorer when I grow up and find new things.  I want to visit Gorongosa Park someday.

Tech:

This week in my Robotics Class I was suppose to make the alligator.  But I found that I only have one rubber band so I ordered another rubber band from a lego store and I am going to make it later.  So this week I made my lion instead.  It is my favorite one that I have done so far, it's like MO2 from Gorongosa Park.

P.E.:

This week in PE we had soccer practice Monday and Wednesday night.  We had a game Thursday night and we won!!! It was our first win so my team and I were really excited.  To celebrate our team win my dad took my sister, younger brother, and I for a treat after the game.  Then on Friday night we had soccer shoot outs to help me practice making soccer goals.

Week #5

Learning Log for Week of September 28th - October 2nd

My favorite thing this week was that I got to do artwork with science.

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my brother and I went onto BrainPop Jr.and watched video's on mass, kilograms, weight , height, and graphs. We took quizzes, we first took an easy quiz and then a hard quiz.  My favorite thing was taking the quizzes.

Math:

This week in Math I learned more with money, this week how to add money.  I completed Unit 11 in Math U See where you learn to round to 100.  I started Unit 12 and will finish next wee.  In Unit 12 I am learning where the decimal point goes for money and how to add money up.

English/Language Arts:

I wrote each day in my journal book. One of my entries was about my indoor soccer shoes, college football games, and P.E. at the park. I am still reading my Ghost in the Attic Book. We met a new character, his name is Eli.  Eli is mean to Mrs. Beesley, who Claire and Kaz are helping to find her ghost.  Mrs. Beesley hires Eli do chores, but if he doesn't do a good job she makes him do the job over again.  So Eli plays tricks on Mrs. Beesley to get back at her.

Science:

This week we talked more about the water cycle and actually made a science experiment.  We took a zip lock bag and drew on it the water cycle and then filled water in the bottom of the zip lock bag and dyed the water blue.  We tapped it to a window and watched it for a few days to see the water cycle in action.  We also did reports on the different clouds, mine was on Cumulus clouds, I presented it to a small group. Cumulus Clouds are big and puffy on the top, but flat on the bottom. We also made a craft out of paper and cotton balls to show what the different types of clouds look like.

Tech
In my Lego Robotic Class I made the "drumming monkey" this week.  It was probably my second hardest to build because you had to built the arms and the head.  I liked that it could drum, I went to the kitchen and got different bowls to try having the monkey play on.

P.E.

We had soccer practice Monday night and Wednesday night.  I was suppose to have a game on Friday night, but they canceled it.  But Saturday's game was good and I scored a free kick.  There were actually two more players blocking the goal, but I scored!

Week #4

Learning Log for Week of September 20th - 25th

My favorite thing this week our field trip to the apple farm.

We got to pick our own apples and they had a few pumpkins

we could pick and see where they make their apple cider.

Homeroom:

This week I played and listened to brain pop junior. I played the game "construct a sorus" with my sister. We learned how they lived and what they looked like.  It was a fun game.

Math:

This week in Math I learned more with money.  I learned how to write and read money.  When we went for our field trip to the apple farm I got to pay for the apples, I had to figure out how much money to give the girl.

English/Language Arts:

I wrote each day in my journal book. One of my entries was about our field trip to the apple farm. I am still working on my Ghost in the Attic Book. Kaz and Claire found Cosmo the go while they were outside trying to solve a ghost detective mystery.

Science:

After learning about the water cycle last week. We went to the park one day and talked about the different clouds in the sky.  We laid down on the grass and looked up at the sky and named the different clouds of cumulous, stratus, and cumulous nimbus clouds.  The stratus clouds moved the fastest in the sky.

Tech

I built my spinner top.  It was cool, it could spin really fast. I put in the codes for music and to make the top spin.  It was a little easier to build I thought than the dancing birds.  I am excited to build the monkey next.

P.E.

We had soccer practice Monday night and Wednesday night.  We did not have a game this week. But at practice on Monday night we had a small game and we wont.  I started using my goalie gloves and I am thinking about goalie practice.

(I am in the turquoise jersey)

Week #3

Learning Log for Week of September 14th - 18th

My favorite thing this week was Geography

and learning about the Earth's Atmosphere.

Homeroom:

This week I played and listened to brain pop junior.  I watched videos on American Symbols like the liberty bell, the bald eagle, the american flag, and the statue of liberty.  It taught me that we need to respect these things because it shows us that we have our freedom.

Math:

This week in Math I learned how to skip count by 5 and that a nickel is 5 cents.  I starting learning about money and where the decimal point goes.  Also how to read the amount of money and how to write it.

English/Language Arts:

I continued writing in my journal this week.  My favorite thing I wrote about was a run that my sister and I went on with my mom one morning.  We went running around our neighborhood and I drew a picture of my black running shoes.  I finished my reading book, "The Haunted Library."  We now know who the library ghost is, it's Claire's Grandma!  She pretended to be a ghost so that more people would come to her library.  Because Claire and Kaz figured out the mystery, they made up their own detective agency called "CK ghost detectives." I started reading the second book called, "The Ghost in the Attic," this book I hope is about how Kaz finds his family.

Science:

This week we talked about is physical geography.  It is made up of atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. Atmosphere is the air around us.  Without the atmosphere the sun would burn us to death and at night we would freeze.  Atmosphere protects us.  The atmosphere gives us air and water.  Lithosphere is the study of land and hydrosphere is the study of water, because hydro is water.

Tech

I built my dancing birds, it was fun.  I made them tweet, chirp, and spin.  There are buttons that you can build and have them do different things to program them to do.

P.E.

We had soccer practice Monday night, but then Wednesday night they canceled because of the rain.  The mailman brought my goalie gloves this week and I am going to use them the next week for my games.  I had soccer shoot outs on Friday night, I learned to block and kick hard.  My game went well....it was 4-6...we were winning most of the game, but the last part of the game one of the players from the other team came running and made two goals.

Week #2

Learning Log for Week of September 7th - 11th

My favorite thing this week in school was reading my book.
I also liked taking my Unit 1 math test.
I earned some money from getting 100%
on the test so I could buy my soccer goalie gloves.

Homeroom:

This week I started working with the different programs in homeroom.  I really like brain pop junior. I like watching videos, especially the one where I learned about weights and the one on measurements.  I watched a video on how to write paragraphs that can help me with my next report on the history of soccer.

Math:

I was able to take my Unit 1 test.  This week in math I learned to add multiple digits, skip counting by 2 and 10, and regrouping. I helped my mom bake cookies and learned about different measurements in the kitchen.

English/Language Arts:

I did my journal writing each day this week, one day I wrote about soccer and then another day I wrote about my blanket and drew a picture of it.  I kept reading my book, The Haunted Library, I am on chapter 8. We still don't know who the library ghost is, but I think it is Kaz's brother Finn.  I checked out the second book in the series from the library.

Science:

This week we talked more about different vertebrates. I also got a lady bug land kit, I couldn't find a lady bug, but I was able to catch a fly and I put peas in it from him eat, but then I let him go after a few hours.  I want to catch a bee.  We learned about invertebrates before we did vertebrates, so I wanted to see the different parts of the insect up close.  I want to buy a microscope so I can put things under it to look at.

Tech

This week I started working on my lego class. My first project is Dancing Birds and I am excited to finish the project.  My legos came with a CD instruction, but my computer doesn't play CD's so my dad and I are trying to figure out how to download the instructions to the computer. We got a new camera for my sister's digital photography class and I have been able to look at it a little bit and see how it works.

P.E.

It has been fun week in soccer. This week I had soccer practice Monday and Wednesday.  We had a game Thursday night, it was a tie.  On Friday nights they do this thing called soccer shoot outs.  This was the first week so me and my little brother went.  We have to practice shooting the ball into the goal. After soccer shoot outs I got to go to sports authority and get a mouthguard because you are 8 times more likely to get hurt in the mouth in soccer than football.  I earned the money to pay for it from working in my grandma and grandpa's front yard.

School Begins.....

Learning Log for Week of August 17th - September 4th

My family and I started school this week and I am happy to start again.
I like school and I am excited to start My Tech High this year.
I am especially excited to start my Robotics class this year.
My favorite thing we did this week was science.
Here are a few more things that I learned:

Homeroom:

I learned about the different programs that I can access and use help for.
I am excited to use some of the programs this year.  I liked introducing myself to the other students and hearing back from one of the teachers.

Math:

This week we started using the program Math-U-See and I am on the Beta level.  I worked on learning Place Value, Sequencing, and Inequalities. Math is my favorite subject. It came with blocks to help me learn and I like building with them while I do my Math and after I make up designs.

English/Language Arts:

I worked on my hand writing this week.  I practiced each day writing two different sentences.  I started reading a new book The Haunted Library, it is my first chapter book and I am excited to read it and check out the second book.  My dad helped me learn how to write a letter, I wrote my Christmas letter to Santa. I learned about what a letter should have in it.  I started a journal and each day I get to write what I am learning.

Science:

This week we talked about the Earth and how it is made up of the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.  My sister and I tried experiments using coconut oil when we baked brownies all by ourselves! We learned about the 5 classes of Vertebrates: Mammal, Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Birds.  We went on a field trip to a museum and I learned about what a dinosaur life was like and how they became extinct.

Tech

I am excited I get to start my Robotics Class and I opened up early.  I am going to try and build an amphibian robot first. I used my mom's phone and made an i-movie with my little brother, it was about mountain biking. Because I really like mountain biking and my brother Cole just got a new bike so I made a movie about our two bikes.  I helped my mom start and design this blog for my learning logs.

P.E.

I have soccer practice twice a week and one game each week.  We lost our first game 2-5 and the second game was 3-4. Soccer is my favorite sport because it is really fun and i like to try to make goals.
