Week #8

Learning Log for Week of October 19th - October 23rd

My favorite thing this week was learning our science experiment.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I did BrainPop. I did the section in math on place value to help me learn more since this is what I was doing in Math Lesson this week. I played shark fish which helped me more about geography. You are a shark and you click on a word that is suppose to answer the question like "What is the largest river in China?"

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson # 16 and took my test.  This section was learning place value with the 1,000;s place.  It was hard a little bit, but once I got use to it it wasn't so hard.

English/Language Arts:

This week I kept reading my book, Who is Abraham Lincoln. I learned more about when Abraham Lincoln became president and that he was our 16th President.  President Lincoln had some hard times, while he was President, his son Willie died when he was 11.  When the Civil War started, President Lincoln's General, George McClellan, he didn't think the army was ready and so he often kept army back so they lost battles that they could have won.  So President Lincoln decided something needed to change and he said, "If McClellan does not want to use the army. I would like to borrow it for a time."

Science:

This week our science experiment was "cleaning pennies." We poured vinegar into a cup and mixed it with some salt until it dissolved and then dropped several dirty pennies into the cup. We watched how the salt was dissolving and how the pennies were getting clean. The dirt or residue that was on the pennies is called copper oxide. We talked about the statue of liberty and how it was a a bronze color originally and how it turned green over time.

Tech:

This week for my Robotics Class, I was able to finish building my Alligator. My favorite thing about the alligator is that it could snap it's mouth. The challenging thing about this project was that the first time I went to build it I didn't have two rubber bands, that make the alligator snap it's mouth, so we had to order another rubber band in. My brother, sister, and I would practice putting different things in it's mouth.

P.E.:

This week in soccer we had practice on Monday night. We focused on passing and goal keeping.  On Wednesday my coaches son and fellow soccer teammate, Kaden, had a soccer birthday practice.  We have a game this Saturday that my grandpa is taking me too and I hope we win!

Week #7

Learning Log for Week of October 12th - October 16th

My favorite thing this week was learning about Abraham Lincoln.

Homeroom:

This week for homeroom I did BrainPop with my sister. We learned about data and probability. I learned about line graphs and how you can show data. I also learned about how probability work and then we solved problems. We also learned about width, length, and other measurements.

Math:

This week in Math I I finished my Lesson #14 and Lesson #15 in my Math-U-See. They teach about measuring with feet, I learned that there are 12" in a foot.  Then I got to learn about perimeter.  I liked using my ruler to solve some of the problems on my worksheets.

English/Language Arts:

This week I got a new book from the Library called, Who is Abraham Lincoln. I learned that Abraham was a funny guy who liked to play jokes. One of his jokes he played was on two men who were getting married on the same day, he arranged for the men to be driven to the other church. Abraham Lincoln did not like slavery.

Science:

This week my family and I got a book called, The Everything Kids Science Experiments Book, and each week we are going to do an experiment from the book.  This week we did the experiment "Animal Camouflage." We got 3 different pieces of colored paper and cut them out in tiny squares and them put them on a piece of paper that was one of the 3 colors we cut out. We then timed how many squares we could pick up in 7 seconds.  My sister got 10 squares and I got 9 squares. We found out that animals that are colored the same as their environment are protected from predators.  My dad showed us his camouflage military uniform he got from my uncle who is in the army. We also looked at pictures and watched a video on animals that camouflage in their environment, my favorite was the scorpion fish.

Tech:

This week I finished my lion. I like it because it is like the lions on Gorongosa Park. It can roar and stand up.

P.E.:

I had just one soccer practice this week because of fall break. But I got some neighbor friends and we went and played soccer a couple of times at the park. I practiced on my dribbling.

Week #6

Learning Log for Week of October 5th - October 9th

My favorite thing this week was learning about a park in

Africa called Gorongosa Park.mI want to visit there someday

and I want to be an explorer when I grow up.

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my sister and I went onto Brain Pop and learned about fractions.  We played a game about fractions called Pearl Driver, it's a game where you have to dive down to find the pearls. You dive down the measurements it tells you to to find a pearl. We both really liked it!

Math:

This week in Math I did my Unit #12 and took my test.  I learned how to do column addition.  I also learned how to add numbers that are money in columns.

English/Language Arts:

I finished my book The Haunted Library, the Ghost in the Attic! Grandma Karen told Claire, her granddaughter, that she could see ghosts when she was 9 like Claire. She meet Kaz and she said she was going to help Kaz find his family.  I hope there is a next book written because I want Kaz to find his family.

Science:

My favorite thing I did this week was to find a program on PBS called, "Gorongosa Park, Rebirth of Paradise." One episode they showed different elephants and how they eat, move around, and keep their territory safe. They also showed a huge group of water birds nesting in trees.  They showed huge lions battling for their territory, the lions were named MO2, Gora, and the Mando Brothers.  They think the Mando brothers are going to win over the territory, but we don't find out till next episode.  I want to be an explorer when I grow up and find new things.  I want to visit Gorongosa Park someday.

Tech:

This week in my Robotics Class I was suppose to make the alligator.  But I found that I only have one rubber band so I ordered another rubber band from a lego store and I am going to make it later.  So this week I made my lion instead.  It is my favorite one that I have done so far, it's like MO2 from Gorongosa Park.

P.E.:

This week in PE we had soccer practice Monday and Wednesday night.  We had a game Thursday night and we won!!! It was our first win so my team and I were really excited.  To celebrate our team win my dad took my sister, younger brother, and I for a treat after the game.  Then on Friday night we had soccer shoot outs to help me practice making soccer goals.

Week #5

Learning Log for Week of September 28th - October 2nd

My favorite thing this week was that I got to do artwork with science.

Homeroom:

This week for Homeroom my brother and I went onto BrainPop Jr.and watched video's on mass, kilograms, weight , height, and graphs. We took quizzes, we first took an easy quiz and then a hard quiz.  My favorite thing was taking the quizzes.

Math:

This week in Math I learned more with money, this week how to add money.  I completed Unit 11 in Math U See where you learn to round to 100.  I started Unit 12 and will finish next wee.  In Unit 12 I am learning where the decimal point goes for money and how to add money up.

English/Language Arts:

I wrote each day in my journal book. One of my entries was about my indoor soccer shoes, college football games, and P.E. at the park. I am still reading my Ghost in the Attic Book. We met a new character, his name is Eli.  Eli is mean to Mrs. Beesley, who Claire and Kaz are helping to find her ghost.  Mrs. Beesley hires Eli do chores, but if he doesn't do a good job she makes him do the job over again.  So Eli plays tricks on Mrs. Beesley to get back at her.

Science:

This week we talked more about the water cycle and actually made a science experiment.  We took a zip lock bag and drew on it the water cycle and then filled water in the bottom of the zip lock bag and dyed the water blue.  We tapped it to a window and watched it for a few days to see the water cycle in action.  We also did reports on the different clouds, mine was on Cumulus clouds, I presented it to a small group. Cumulus Clouds are big and puffy on the top, but flat on the bottom. We also made a craft out of paper and cotton balls to show what the different types of clouds look like.

Tech
In my Lego Robotic Class I made the "drumming monkey" this week.  It was probably my second hardest to build because you had to built the arms and the head.  I liked that it could drum, I went to the kitchen and got different bowls to try having the monkey play on.

P.E.

We had soccer practice Monday night and Wednesday night.  I was suppose to have a game on Friday night, but they canceled it.  But Saturday's game was good and I scored a free kick.  There were actually two more players blocking the goal, but I scored!
